(Baongehan.vn) - Due to the influence of cold air, low temperatures have damaged many areas of spring rice that have been planted and young seedlings in Quynh Luu.

This spring crop, Quynh Thanh commune planted 518 hectares of rice, and the commune has completed nearly 90% of the area. Due to the recent cold spell, 40% of Quynh Thanh commune's spring rice area was damaged, concentrated in deep pools and dike areas.

Many rice fields in Quynh Dien and Quynh Thanh communes died and rotted.

According to Mr. Ho Xuan Xuyen - Vice Chairman of Quynh Thanh Commune People's Committee: "The rice areas that died were mainly people who sowed before the crop schedule. We are directing people in the affected areas to concentrate on planting, or to buy young rice seedlings from other localities to sow. In addition, we are widely informing people to register for short-term rice varieties at the Cooperative to have a timely seed supply plan."

Quynh Dien commune also suffered 20% damage to the rice area that was planted before the 15th of the 12th lunar month, concentrated in hamlets 1, 2, and 3. The rice varieties that died were mainly Thai Xuyen 111, Thuy Huong, Chan Trau Huong, and some high-quality pure rice varieties. For hamlets 4, 5, and 6, although they had only been planted for 3 days, up to 50% of the rice seedlings lying on the field were dead and rotten.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long - Vice Chairman of Quynh Dien Commune People's Committee said: In the current situation, Quynh Dien Commune is promoting people to take short-term varieties such as Khang Dan, Thien Uu 8 and some glutinous rice varieties and take mud and soil to plant seedlings right in the yard and garden to accelerate the development of seedlings, sow in time, and ensure productivity at the end of the season.

After the cold spell, Quynh Luu farmers took advantage of the opportunity to go to the fields to sow crops.

According to preliminary statistics, the whole district has 30% of the total 7,550 hectares of rice damaged, mainly concentrated in Quynh Thanh, Quynh Dien, Quynh Thang, Tan Thang, Quynh Tam. For the damaged localities, Quynh Luu district requires localities to check and count the area of ​​dead rice. At the same time, for newly planted rice areas, it is necessary to regulate flooding at the foot of the fields to keep the rice plants warm; cover the unplanted rice seedlings with plastic, especially do not apply fertilizer or nitrogen fertilizer on cold days. For peanuts and corn, people are advised to regularly check and care for them to ensure productivity and output according to the set plan. When the temperature drops below 150C, production must be stopped immediately.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quynh Luu district said: Currently, the district has directed the communes to establish teams to organize inspections and review of the entire affected area. For areas with less than 50% damage and with spare seedlings, focus on solutions to keep warm and organize recovery when the weather warms up. Areas with high mortality rates that cannot be recovered should immediately implement plans to sow additional seedlings to plant after Tet.
