Quynh Luu: More than 6,500/7,300 hectares of rice infected with leaf rollers

(Baonghean.vn) - In the summer-autumn crop of 2016, Quynh Luu planted over 7,300 hectares of rice, however, due to prolonged hot weather, leaf roller disease appeared and damaged about 6,500 hectares.

After completing the 2016 summer-autumn crop, from July 12, 2016, the District People's Committee proactively implemented urgent measures to organize disease prevention and control and provided 50% support for the price of plant protection drugs to prevent rice leaf roller disease, and at the same time directed localities to arrange funding to support the remaining 50% of the price of drugs to fight the disease.

However, due to the intense heat, the 4th generation leaf roller epidemic broke out from July 18 to 25, 2016 on all rice fields from the tillering to initial budding stages, with a common worm density of 80-100 worms/m2, in some high places 250-300 worms/m2, and in some rare cases 450 worms/m2 concentrated in the 1st instar stage, causing a widespread epidemic.

Of the 7,300 hectares of summer-autumn rice that have been planted, about 6,500 hectares of rice are infected with the fourth generation of leaf rollers, concentrated in the communes of Quynh Yen, Quynh Hau, Quynh Hong, and Quynh Giang.

Leaf rollers cause rice leaves to lose chlorophyll and dry out. If not controlled promptly, it will affect productivity.

To prevent pests, especially leaf rollers, the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directed people to continue to stay in the fields to care for and prevent diseases that harm rice. They directed people to increase the spraying of pesticides in areas with high density according to the recommendations of technical staff. Thereby, limiting the density of harmful pests, helping rice plants grow well.
