(Baonghean.vn) - More than 70% of Bangladeshis live in corrugated iron houses, especially in rural areas. During the summer months, temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius, making life in these corrugated iron houses extremely hot and stuffy.

To solve this problem, advertising agency Grey Dhaka teamed up with volunteers from social enterprise Grameen Intel to create an eco-friendly “air conditioner” called the Eco-Cooler, the world’s first air cooler that doesn’t require electricity.

Eco-Cooler is actually made from used plastic bottles, cut in half and attached to a cardboard sheet sized to fit the window size of the house. The operating principle is very simple, when hot air enters the bottle body, it will be compressed by the neck of the bottle, cooling before being released into the house.

Depending on wind direction and air flow pressure, Eco-Cooler can reduce the temperature inside corrugated iron houses by up to 5 degrees Celsius.

“Most of the houses in Bangladesh are made of corrugated iron, and our Eco-Cooler has the potential to help millions of people there. We truly hope that this volunteer effort will make a difference in their lives,” said Abdullah Al Mamun, Executive Vice President of Grameeen Intel.

“After the initial trials, the Eco-Cooler patent design was made available online for free download. The materials used to make this air cooler are readily available, so it can be said that the Eco-Cooler is a low-cost and environmentally friendly solution,” said Syed Gousul Alam Shaon, head of innovation and managing partner at Grey Dhaka.

With the help of Grameen Intel employees, the first “air conditioners” were installed in villages across Bangladesh.
