In recent times, Nghe An’s health sector has made rapid and remarkable progress in terms of expertise. This comes from the fact that health sector officials and employees have constantly pioneered innovation, researched and applied science and technology to improve the quality and effectiveness of treatment for patients. Typical examples of this innovation and research movement include People’s Physician Pham Vinh Hung and Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Van Khanh.

Research and innovation for patients

With the motto "Each scientific research topic, each technical solution applied to the practice of examination and treatment contributes to helping patients enjoy advanced medical achievements, reduce treatment costs, and ease economic burdens", over the past years, People's Physician Pham Vinh Hung - Deputy Director of Nghe An Oncology Hospital has continuously promoted research and application of science and technology in medical examination and treatment.

As a pioneer in the scientific research and professional development movement at Nghe An Oncology Hospital, in the past 13 years, Associate Professor Pham Vinh Hung and his colleagues have had 26 scientific topics at the grassroots and provincial levels; 19 provincial initiatives; 12 projects winning the Nghe An Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Award and 12 articles published in national journals. He personally has 6 projects winning the Nghe An Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Award: 2 First prizes, 3 Third prizes and 1 Encouragement prize.

All scientific topics and initiatives of Associate Professor Pham Vinh Hung are highly applicable in the practice of examining and treating patients and have many social meanings. Typical topics include: "Research on the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using a guided robot", "Research on clinical characteristics and computed tomography images of non-small cell lung cancer"; "Application of laparoscopic liver resection surgery to treat liver cancer"...

With the scientific topic "Research on the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using a guided robot", Associate Professor Pham Vinh Hung has helped Nghe An Oncology Hospital in particular and Nghe An Health sector in general to have a new and effective method of treating lung cancer. (Up to now, there have been very few domestic studies on the application of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Nghe An Oncology Hospital is the second unit nationwide to deploy the technique and research this topic).

Previously, surgical removal of lung tumors combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy was considered the best treatment for lung cancer. However, the reality is that nearly 80% of patients are no longer able to undergo surgery because the disease is detected at a late stage or the patient has a combination of internal diseases, the patient refuses surgery... The radiofrequency ablation (RFA) method using a guided robot that Dr. Pham Vinh Hung researched has overcome the above limitations. With this method, tumors in lung cancer patients are reduced in size or disappear completely.

Talking about his research and creative activities, Dr. Pham Vinh Hung shared: “Feeling sorry for my patients who have to fight with their illnesses every hour, every day, I tell myself that I need to try to find ways to help them reduce the pain and difficulties in the treatment process. This is the wish and motivation that helps me to constantly strive to find more effective treatment methods.”

With a desire for the patients, Associate Professor Pham Vinh Hung himself has been at the forefront of the scientific research and professional development movement at Nghe An Oncology Hospital. As Deputy Director and Chairman of the Trade Union, he has also actively inspired and promoted the hospital's innovation and scientific application research movement to develop strongly. It is known that from 2021 to present, Nghe An Oncology Hospital has carried out research on over 300 scientific topics.

Dedicated, striving for development

Like Senior Doctor Pham Vinh Hung, Doctor Nguyen Van Khanh - Director of Anh Son District Medical Center is also passionate about mastering new and advanced techniques to effectively protect and care for people's health. Working at the district medical unit, Doctor Nguyen Van Khanh always pays attention to learning new and advanced techniques from provincial and central hospitals to apply to help patients in the district.

In 2010, the endoscopic surgery method was just started to be implemented in district hospitals nationwide. Doctor Nguyen Van Khanh was one of the first district-level doctors in Nghe An to master and skillfully perform this technique... making endoscopic surgery the main trend of the Surgery department at Anh Son District Medical Center.

Having performed many laparoscopic surgeries, Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh has noticed a difficult problem right at his unit. That is removing large specimens from the patient's body. Specifically, in the absence of modern equipment, doctors at the district level are forced to widen the hole to insert the endoscope to remove the specimens. Thus, laparoscopic surgery is no different from open surgery - causing large wounds and slow recovery.

To overcome this disadvantage, there is a specialized device on the market that specializes in cutting and removing large-sized and large-volume specimens, manufactured in Germany. However, this device is sold for up to 500 million VND (Anh Son District Medical Center cannot buy it)... From 2014-2019, Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh has constantly struggled, researched and created a completely new endoscopic surgical specimen cutting machine, with a different operating principle, similar effects but the production cost is less than 1/10 compared to the German device.

The endoscopic specimen cutter, created by Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh, has successfully solved the problem of removing large benign specimens at Anh Son District Medical Center. The machine has many outstanding advantages such as beautiful appearance; convenient operation; cutting and sucking specimens at appropriate speed. Specimens are cut into long bars by the machine, sucked out thoroughly and safely... In particular, due to its low cost, the machine can be purchased and used in most medical units, especially district-level medical facilities - basic facilities that do not have large budgets to buy expensive specimen cutters.

Along with the creation of the specimen cutter in laparoscopic surgery, during this time, Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh also created and launched another medical device - called "Uterine support rod in laparoscopic hysterectomy". This device helps surgeons easily identify and find the patient's uterus during the dissection process. It is known that the production cost of Dr. Khanh's uterine support rod is only about 6 million VND. Meanwhile, the uterine support rod made by a foreign medical equipment manufacturer costs up to 120 million VND.

The "Endoscopic specimen cutter" invented by Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh was awarded the First Prize by the People's Committee of Nghe An province in the "Nghe An Province Science and Technology Innovation Competition 2020"; granted an exclusive patent by the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology; and put into operation by over 20 hospitals in and outside the province. Similarly, his "Uterine support rod in laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery" was awarded the First Prize by the People's Committee of Nghe An province in the "Nghe An Province Science and Technology Innovation Competition 2023".

Sharing about his scientific and technological innovation activities, Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh confided: “The practice of medical examination and treatment has constantly posed problems for medical staff to solve. Personally, I am just a participant in that process. In the future, I will continue to strive to make more contributions to the development of my local health sector”./.
