According to Mirror, scientists operating the ESO telescope in Munich, Germany, discovered a planet with many conditions similar to Earth, orbiting the star Proxima Centauri only 4.2 light years from the Solar System.
Researchers will announce the discovery of this planet at a press conference held at ESO headquarters at 7 a.m. EDT on August 24, or about 6 p.m. on August 24, Vietnam time.
Discovered in 1915, Proxima Centauri is the closest star to Earth. "The unnamed planet is very similar to Earth and orbits Proxima Centauri at a distance close enough for liquid water to flow on its surface, a key element for life to exist. Scientists have never discovered a second Earth so close," German newspaper Der Spiegel quoted ESO sources as saying.
