All-Asian model show in New York
Designer Claudia Li wants to honor Asian beauty on the catwalk at Fashion Week in the US.
This is a rare occasion for New York Fashion Week to feature an all-Asian show. The models who perform are mostly from Japan and China. Designer Claudia Li wants Asian models to break free and be recognized in major fashion events around the world. "They rarely have the opportunity to appear on runways in Europe and America. I hope this fashion show can spread their bravery and ability," she said.
The Spring Summer 2019 collection was inspired by the designer's family outing. The outfits are a combination of oriental style and New Zealand imagery.
The main motif in the collection is the Mount Cook lily - New Zealand's most famous flower.
Claudia Li said her mother loved flowers and passed that passion on to her. "I like to hide and observe the beautiful life, where everything is quiet and gentle. I think it's time for me to tell everyone who I am in fashion."
The New Zealand designer has used the Mount Cook flower on everything from jumpers to shirts and silk jackets. It’s printed in crisp, watercolor-like detail, or painted in a translucent, painterly way. It’s also been rendered in fabric, stitched onto knitwear, or hand-embroidered by artisans in Madagascar.
Using light blue and yellow tones with a figure-hiding straight-cut dress, Claudia Li wants to bring comfort and ease to the wearer.
