Sharp's smartphone prototype almost eliminates the screen bezel, the edges are curved and overflow to the edge of the device.

At the CEATech 2016 exhibition in Japan, electronics company Sharp demonstrated a smartphone prototype with a curved screen on all four sides and a display space that almost occupies the entire front surface. The product is called Corner R, using a 5.2-inch Full HD panel, giving a pixel density of 425 ppi.

To achieve the impressive design above, the smartphone is equipped by Sharp with an IGZO LCD screen with Free Form Display technology. The Japanese company said that reducing the production cost of this type of screen still has many obstacles but Corner R will soon be commercialized.

Corner R promises to be the smartphone with the highest screen-to-body ratio in the world, reaching about 90%. The device has almost only the bottom edge that cannot be displayed, where the Sharp logo and the familiar three-button navigation row on Android are located.

Sharp has long harbored the ambition of a bezel-less smartphone, and since 2014 the company has introduced the super-thin-bezel Android duo Aquos Crystal and Aquos Crystal X. The Japanese company also removed the speaker on the top edge, replacing it with technology that transmits sound through the screen.
