Repeat offender in human trafficking, sentenced to 5 years in prison

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of January 19, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try the human trafficking case against Nguyen Thi Nhat (born in 1996), residing in My Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district.

According to the indictment, in October 2015, after hearing her friend Le Thi H. (born in 1996, from Thanh Hoa) complaining that she was pregnant, had no place to live, and no job, Nguyen Thi Nhat told H. to go to Lao Cai to wait for the baby to be born, then go to China to work as a prostitute at a Japanese hair salon with a salary of 20 million VND.

H. told this story to her friend, Le Thi Tr. (born in 1992, residing in Dien Chau). Tr. did not want to sell sex but wanted to go to China to get married. Nhat agreed to take Tr. to China to get married for 70 million VND. If this transaction was successful, Nhat would pocket 80 million VND.

On the evening of October 13, 2015, Nhat took Tr. and H. from Dien Chau to Hanoi to take them to China, but was discovered and arrested by Yen Thanh District Police.

At the trial, Nguyen Thi Nhat admitted her crime. Previously, on August 26, 2015, Nguyen Thi Nhat was sentenced to 2 years in prison but given a suspended sentence by the Yen Thanh District People's Court for organizing others to flee abroad.

The panel of judges determined that Nhat’s actions were dangerous recidivism, however, the defendant had confessed honestly, repented, and the victims were partly at fault in this case. After considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, the panel sentenced Nguyen Thi Nhat to 3 years in prison for human trafficking. Combined with the previous sentence, Nhat must serve a 5-year prison sentence for both crimes./.
