The Varyag missile cruiser of the Slava class (project 1164, NATO reporting name Atlas), was designed to be used as a surface attack warship.

The ship was launched in July 1983 and officially commissioned into the Soviet Navy on October 16, 1989, with the original name Chervona Ukraina.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Russian Navy took over the cruiser.

Since 1996, the ship was renamed Varyag and became the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, Russian Navy.

The Varyag cruiser has a standard displacement of 9,800 tons, full load of 11,490 tons; length of 186.4m, width of 20.8m, height of 8.4m, has 4 gas turbine engines with a total capacity of 130,000Hp, maximum speed of 32 nautical miles/h, cruising range of 7,500 nautical miles (13,200km) at a speed of 18 nautical miles/h.

Varyag is equipped with 16 P-500 Bazalt long-range supersonic anti-ship missiles (NATO designation SS-N-12 “Sandbox”) carrying a 1-ton conventional warhead or a 350 Kt nuclear warhead.

In addition, Varyag is also equipped with 2 clusters of 2 9K33M “Osa-M” close-range air defense missiles (NATO designation SA-N-4 “Gecko”) with a base of 40 missiles.

This type of missile is 3.2m long, 0.21m in diameter, has a range of 15km, an operational altitude of 12km, and a launch speed of up to 2.5Mach.

The ship also has a flight deck and hangar for a Ka-25/27/28 anti-submarine helicopter.
