Health insurance card expires if payment is 30 days late.
If the unit is 30 days or more late in paying health insurance for employees, the health insurance card will expire.
When an employee incurs medical examination and treatment costs during the period when the health insurance card expires, the employer must pay. The social insurance agency shall directly pay the medical examination and treatment costs according to regulations after the unit has paid the full amount of late health insurance payments.
"Vietnam Social Security is instructing and directing collection officers to urge and notify employers that after two notices have been sent but the employer still does not pay, the validity of the health insurance card will be reduced" - Mr. Vu Manh Chu - Deputy Head of Collection Department, Vietnam Social Security said.

Health insurance card data is centrally managed and linked with collection data. When receiving health insurance cards from patients coming for medical examination, health insurance card data information is looked up on the health insurance card data reception portal of the health insurance appraisal information system to determine the validity of the health insurance card. Based on the lookup results, health insurance card treatment facilities perform:
Only accept payment of health insurance costs for health insurance participants who are paying health insurance and whose health insurance cards are still valid.
Mr. Vu Manh Chu also added that health insurance treatment costs will not be paid for cases where participants have reported a reduction in health insurance payments but at the time of treatment, the health insurance card is still valid./.
