With a maximum speed of Mach 4 and state-of-the-art weapons, Russia asserts that the MiG-41 fighter is capable of intercepting hypersonic targets.

This statement was quoted by Sputnik as saying that the General Director of the Russian MiG Corporation, Mr. Ilya Tarasenko, said that when it comes into operation, the MiG-41 is capable of flying and operating in space. Currently, the Prospective Long-Range Interceptor Aviation Complex (PAK DP) MiG-41 is being developed to replace the MiG-31 high-altitude interceptors.

Ilya Tarasenko affirmed that the MiG-41 will be able to perform missions in space. "We have done this. For us, it is a natural development of the MiG-41. This will be a completely new technology aircraft. New technologies, stealth capabilities, working in space, new speed, new range."

According to the plan, the MiG-41 will be put into service in the Russian Air Force after 2020. The MiG-41 fighter will possess all the advantages of its predecessor, the MiG-31, and will most likely be able to reach Mach 4 speed. And this will allow the MiG-41 to shoot down hypersonic aircraft.

Although there is no further information about the MiG-41 fighter-interceptor, Russian military experts affirm that MiG will apply all new materials based on the principles of manufacturing 4++ and 5th generation aircraft for the new fighter line.

Despite being planned, up to now, the MiG-31 is still the backbone interceptor fighter of the Russian Air Force with the fastest flight speed in the world. In addition, the Russian MiG-31 squadron is also undergoing a comprehensive modernization process to enhance its combat capabilities.

After undergoing the upgrade, old MiG-31 versions will be upgraded to the more modern MiG-31BM standard with new avionics and weapons systems. This upgrade is estimated to make the MiG-31BM 2.6 times more effective than the previous version.

In late 2015, the air regiment stationed at Tsentralnaya Uglovaya air base in the Vladivostok region, Russia, received three new MiG-31BMs.

The regiment's Su-27 and MiG-31 fighter squadrons will be fully upgraded to the Su-27SM and MiG-31BM variants in 2016. This also means that their service life will be extended until 2020 while the Russian Air Force completes the development of the MiG-41.
