Winter shrimp productivity loses, selling price wins

(Baonghean.vn) -Dien Chau district does not encourage people to raise winter shrimp because of the high risks due to the weather. However, in the district, many households have invested in raising winter shrimp on about 15 hectares of ponds in the communes of Dien Trung and Dien Thinh. Despite the unusually cold weather, nearly half of the households raising winter shrimp still succeeded.

Many shrimp ponds in Dien Trung commune, Dien Chau district are running water fans to take care of the remaining shrimp after the record cold spell of the year.

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture of Dien Chau district, the average winter shrimp yield in Dien Trung is more than 3 tons/ha. Mr. Nguyen Bac in hamlet 14, Dien Trung applied the VietGAP shrimp farming process, harvested 4 tons of shrimp in 2 ponds, sold at 170 thousand VND/kg, earning hundreds of millions of VND in profit.

Mr. Dau Ngoc Hoa, forestry and fishery extension officer of Dien Chau commune, said: The commune has 17 households raising winter shrimp, of which 8 households lost or drew, 9 households won. The average winter shrimp here is lower than spring shrimp, but the selling price is high, the largest shrimp sells for 200,000 VND/kg, the lowest is 130,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Cao Khac Khoi's winter shrimp in Dien Trung after nearly 5 months of farming has only reached 150 shrimp/kg, but will have to be harvested to treat the pond for the upcoming main crop.
