US President Barack Obama's Air Force One landed in Hiroshima, Japan on the afternoon of May 27, right after the G7 summit on Ise-Shima Island and a short visit to the US Iwakuni Air Base, located just over 60km from Hiroshima.

Speaking at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, President Obama said: “Seventy-one years have passed since one clear morning, death suddenly came from the sky, and the world was changed forever. A flash of light and an atomic bomb destroyed the entire city. This proves that human beings possess the means to destroy themselves.”

Mr. Obama also emphasized: “Why are we here? We are here to pay our respects to those who have passed away.”

The White House leader's statement was made after he arrived at the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima, laying a wreath at the memorial for the victims. On the memorial is engraved the words in Japanese: "Let the souls here rest in peace, we will not let the crime be repeated."

During his visit, President Obama is expected to meet with some of the survivors of the nuclear disaster, most of whom were children at the time of the bombing. At least 140,000 people were killed in this historic bombing.

President Obama hopes his presence here will partly play a role in strengthening efforts to curb the global nuclear weapons development program./.
