In a tweet on August 24, President Donald Trump said he had asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to visit North Korea at this time. The reason for this decision is that Mr. Trump feels that the progress of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is too slow. President Trump also believes that China is not participating in supporting this process due to the US's tough trade policy towards this country. According to Mr. Trump, negotiations with North Korea will be postponed until the US and China resolve trade issues between the two countries.

President Trump's announcement came a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he would visit North Korea to continue talks on denuclearization. Pompeo had earlier appointed Ford Motor Co. CEO Stephen Biegun as the US special envoy to North Korea. Pompeo and Biegun were originally scheduled to travel to North Korea next week in hopes of breaking the deadlock in negotiations.
