The US and China are now locked in a protracted trade war, with President Trump warning of consequences if China does not seek a deal as soon as possible.

In a tweet on May 11, Mr. Trump wrote: “I think China feels they are being dealt a huge blow in the recent negotiations and may want to wait until the next US Presidential election in 2020 to see if they get lucky if the Democrats win.”

“In that case, they will continue to rip off the United States by $500 billion a year. But they don’t realize that if I win, they will get a worse trade deal than if they negotiated it in my second term. So they better act now or they will be hit with even bigger tariffs,” Trump warned.

Two days of talks between trade delegations from Beijing and Washington ended on May 10 without reaching an agreement.

China's top negotiator said the two sides would meet again in Beijing soon, without specifying a specific date, and warned that China would not make concessions to the US on "important rules".
