Turkish President to visit Russia on August 9

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in St Petersburg on August 9, Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek said during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

"The Ambassador informed us that our Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has confirmed that he will arrive in St. Petersburg on August 9. We are here today to accelerate the normalization of the situation and the relations between us that were interrupted since November 24, 2015," Simsek said.

Arkady Dvorkovich noted that Türkiye's apology for the downing of the Su-24 created the basis for restoring relations between Ankara and Moscow.

Erdogan’s visit to Russia will take place against the backdrop of the aftermath of the attempted coup in Türkiye. Among the suspected rebels were the pilots who shot down the Russian bomber. Both pilots have now been arrested.
