Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack on the Russian border aimed at creating a "buffer zone" inside Russian territory.

According to RIA Novosti on August 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video posted on Telegram that the purpose of the Ukrainian Armed Forces entering the Kursk region of Russia was to create a "buffer zone".

“Creating a buffer zone inside Russian territory is our activity in Kursk,” President Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian leader also asked the West to speed up arms supplies to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

President Zelensky said the coming weeks would be crucial for Ukraine's diplomatic efforts with partners in Europe, the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere.

“We have expanded and will continue to expand the circle of supporters of ending this war. The important thing is that Ukraine enters this autumn even stronger than before,” President Zelensky said.

Ukraine launched a raid on Russia's Kursk border region on August 6. After nearly two weeks, Kiev announced it had taken control of more than 1,150km2territory, capturing more than 100 Russian prisoners.

On the Russian side, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said that the advances of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kursk had been stopped. He stressed that the operation in the area would be completed by defeating the enemy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Kiev government had committed provocations and was firing indiscriminately, including at civilian targets. The Russian leader stressed that the enemy would receive a worthy response and all goals set by Russia would be achieved.
