Phan Bội Châu, whose given name was Phan Văn San and pen name was Sào Nam, was born on December 26, 1867, in Sa Nam village, Nam Đàn district, Nghệ An province, into a family of patriotic Confucian scholars.

In his youth, Phan Van San was intelligent and quick-witted. Witnessing the loss of his country, the destruction of his home, and the suffering of his people, young Confucian scholar San was inspired with patriotic thoughts and a determination to find a way to save the nation.

With a patriotic stance leaning towards violent revolution, Phan established the Duy Tan Society, the Vietnam Restoration Society, and then the Vietnam National Party to gather forces and seek foreign aid. Most notably, the Dong Du movement laid the foundation for changes in the country in the early 20th century, contributing to the training of intellectuals ready to embrace the path of proletarian revolution, many of whom later became key figures in the Vietnamese revolution.
