When meeting his girlfriend, Thai wore a police uniform and introduced himself as working at the Economic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security). In early February, Ms. Nguyen took Thai to her hometown to meet her parents. There, taking advantage of the time when his girlfriend's family was away, the young man rummaged through and stole 35 million VND from his girlfriend's mother, hid it in a rice bin, and then took a bus to Thanh Hoa City to have fun.
When Ms. Nguyen's family called, Thai said he borrowed the money to take care of some work and would pay back double. On February 6, Thai bought two rings and a fake gold necklace for Ms. Nguyen's mother and then asked to borrow another 200 million VND to take care of the work. He promised that after finishing the work, he would buy a car and rebuild a 4 billion VND house for Ms. Nguyen's family.
