Growing passion fruit earns 100 million VND/ha in Tuong Duong

(Baonghean.vn) - At this time, Nhon Mai, Tam Hop, and Huu Khuong communes of Tuong Duong district are harvesting passion fruit, with an estimated average yield of 10 tons/ha.

These days, at Tham Tham village of the Mong people in Nhon Mai commune, Tuong Duong, the passion fruit harvest is bustling on an area of ​​10 hectares.

Mr. Xong Ba Ka in Tham Tham village excitedly said: Previously, the village's land was mostly abandoned, some areas of upland rice cultivation were of low productivity. Now, with the State's support for passion fruit cultivation, this crop is expected to yield 10 - 12 tons of fruit/ha, sold at 8,000 VND/kg, earning over 100 million VND/ha.

Mr. Lo Kham Kha, Head of Tuong Duong Agriculture Department said: In 2016, Tuong Duong tested 3 hectares of passion fruit planted in Nhon Mai commune. After achieving good results, seeing that passion fruit is suitable for the climate conditions, in 2017 the district continued to expand to over 53 hectares in Nhon Mai, Tam Hop, Huu Khuong communes, Nhon Mai commune alone planted 48 hectares in Huoi Co and Tham Tham villages.

Particularly, passion fruit in Huoi Co village, Nhon Mai commune reaches 12 - 15 tons/ha. Notably, the consumption price is quite stable, reaching an average of 8,000 VND/kg, Nafoods Joint Stock Company consumes all the harvest.

To develop passion fruit growing areas, Tuong Duong district has integrated project programs to support people with over 5 billion VND, including money for seeds, trellis construction, soil treatment, etc. Agricultural and extension officers coordinate with communes to guide people in planting and caring for passion fruit trees.

Moving forward, Tuong Duong will survey some areas with suitable climate conditions to expand the area of ​​passion fruit trees, promising that this will be a long-term and stable economic development direction to help ethnic minorities increase production value.
