Intercropping turmeric under the forest canopy generates hundreds of millions of dong in income.
(Baonghean.vn) - By applying clean and efficient production methods, Hoang Mai town (Nghe An province) has many economic models that generate high income.
In 2016, Hoang Mai town developed a model for growing turmeric under the forest canopy. This method utilizes the area under the forest canopy to grow raw materials, retain soil moisture, and increase income.

The model was implemented in the hybrid acacia plantation area of Mr. Ho Ba Chinh, Hamlet 2, Quynh Vinh Commune, with an area of 5,000m2 and a planting density of 20,000 trees/ha. Mr. Chinh's family regularly weeds and prunes the forest trees to create good ventilation for turmeric to grow.
To date, thanks to good care and abundant rainfall, turmeric has developed well, with a germination rate of 97%. Harvesting is expected at the end of December, with a projected yield of 10 tons/ha. In fact, turmeric has been grown on high-lying alluvial and hilly land in Quynh Vinh for many years, generating an income of 200 million VND/hectare. The experimental model of growing turmeric under the forest canopy opens up a direction for integrated production, increasing income, especially for communes with large areas of forest land like Quynh Vinh and Quynh Trang.
With funding from the Nghe An provincial science and technology budget, Hoang Mai town has also developed a model for "Commercial farming of hybrid tilapia of the Israeli strain". This model aims to improve the farming environment for sustainable stability and enhance economic efficiency for farmers.

The project aims to improve the environmental quality of long-standing shrimp ponds by implementing intercropping and cage farming in shrimp farms. The selected participant is Mr. Tran Toan, from Hamlet 15, Quynh Vinh Commune, Hoang Mai Town, with a total aquaculture area of 2 hectares, and a model pond covering 4,000 square meters. The number of shrimp fry released is 10,000, with stocking beginning on July 5, 2016.
During the implementation of the model, under the guidance of technical staff, the household owner monitored, cared for, and managed the fish very well. Throughout the farming process, VietGAP procedures were applied, resulting in a stable environment and no fish diseases. Inspections to date show the fish have reached a weight of 3-3.5g/fish. Harvest is expected in December, with an average size of 0.7g/fish, yielding a profit of over 50 million VND.
