"Mrs. Clinton is protected by a system that is set up. She will be investigated for a long time, sentenced in a criminal trial," Independent quoted Mr. Trump as saying today in Minneapolis, the capital of Minnesota. This is the state where Mr. Trump is trailing Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in opinion polls. Observers believe that Mr. Trump has little chance of winning here.
Mr Trump's running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, said he would accept the election if there was a "clear result". Both the Republican and Democratic campaigns are preparing legal options if the result is disputed.
The latest polls show Mrs Clinton leading Mr Trump, while 30 million Americans have already voted.
According to an NBC-Wall Street Journal poll released yesterday, Mrs. Clinton received 44% of the voter's support, 4% more than Mr. Trump. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 6%, while Green Party candidate Jill Stein received 2%.
The FBI announced yesterday that it would maintain its initial conclusion that Clinton would not be criminally prosecuted after an investigation into her use of a private email server for official business while serving as US Secretary of State.
A law enforcement official said the announcement from the FBI director would close investigations into Clinton's email activities.
