"I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man," AFP quoted US President Donald Trump writing on Twitter, using the nickname he gave to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
Mr Trump’s comments came after Mr Tillerson revealed that the US still has open channels of communication with North Korea to discuss its nuclear and missile programmes, but Pyongyang has shown no interest in discussing them.
"Save your energy, Rex. We'll do what needs to be done," the US President said.
On September 30, during a visit to China, Secretary of State Tillerson said the US was considering whether North Korea was interested in discussing it and that Washington still maintains multiple direct channels of communication with Pyongyang. This was the first time a voice from the Trump administration acknowledged the information.
