"I have not read the Mueller report, despite having every right to do so. I only know the conclusions in the report and the most important point is No Collusion," US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter yesterday, referring to the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.
Special Counsel Mueller delivered a nearly 400-page confidential report to Attorney General William Barr in late March, concluding a 22-month investigation into Trump's alleged collusion with Russia. Mueller found no evidence that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the election. Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein also concluded that there was insufficient evidence to charge the US President with obstruction of justice.
Barr is expected to release a redacted version of the report later this month, limiting details that could compromise ongoing investigations, grand jury interviews, classified material, and information that could compromise the privacy and reputational interests of third parties. Democrats had previously pressed Barr to release the entire Mueller report without redactions.
"Thirteen Trump-hating Democrats were given $30 million and two years, and they found no collusion or obstruction of justice. But the Democrats will never be satisfied. It's a complete waste of time," the White House boss added.
Mueller, former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), was appointed in May 2017 as special prosecutor, responsible for investigating allegations of Russian interference in the US election. Trump has repeatedly criticized the investigation as a "witch hunt". Russia has also denied and described the allegations of interference in the US election as "ridiculous", "politically motivated" and "a shameful farce".
