China has begun developing a supercomputer capable of performing more than one trillion calculations per second, 10 times faster than the world's fastest computer today.

The new supercomputer system is being built by the National Research Center for Parallel Computing Engineering and Technology (NRCPC) and is scheduled to be installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Jinan, Shandong, China, Xinhua reported yesterday.

With a speed of one trillion calculations per second, this supercomputer will be 10 times faster than the world's fastest computer today, also made in China.

In June, China's Sunway Taihulight computer was recognized as the world's fastest supercomputer at the 2016 International Supercomputing Conference in Germany.

The project comes with many challenges and risks, said Yang Meihong, director of the National Supercomputing Center. "This is a test of the effectiveness of technology independently developed by China," Yang said.

China is carrying out three separate supercomputer development projects led by NRCPC, the National University of Defense Technology and Sugon Information Industry.

Supercomputers can help with tasks such as oil exploration, high-end equipment manufacturing, medicine and graphic design. According to the International Supercomputing Conference, China owns 167 of the world's top 500 supercomputers.
