Over the past five years, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the lives of Chinese people have improved greatly, He Lifeng, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said at a press conference this afternoon at the Press Center of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing.

More than 60 million people were lifted out of poverty and provided access to education, basic healthcare and housing between 2013 and 2016. To turn China into a moderately prosperous society with no poverty by 2020, Chinese authorities are determined to lift another 10 million out of the more than 40 million poor people out of poverty this year.

According to Mr. Ha, Chinese leaders predict economic growth this year will reach 6.5%. This is considered the lowest level in many years. China's average GDP growth in the period 2003 - 2012 was 10.5%, the period 2013 - 2016 was 7.2% and GDP growth in the first 6 months of this year was 6.9%.

Mr. Ha said that China aims for green and sustainable growth. China has introduced a series of measures to address the steel surplus, reducing more than 100 million tons of steel and more than 400 million cubic meters of coal. Steel plays an important role in China's economy during its boom period but also has a major impact on the environment.

In the past 5 years, a series of new industries and economies have emerged, such as "bike sharing", e-commerce, and telecommunications technology, creating millions of new jobs and solving the problem of human resources in areas that have been cut.

China also strives to eliminate "fundamental contradictions", including the gap between rich and poor, between rural and urban areas, as well as the quality of development and people's need for a better life, in order to achieve sustainable growth.

"The economy has grown steadily over the past year, thanks to the leadership of the party, with President Xi Jinping playing the core role, leading the country on the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. We have full confidence in China's future," Mr. Ha concluded.
