England has a new head coach

December 1, 2016 06:20

The English Football Association (FA) and Gareth Southgate signed a four-year contract on November 30, appointing him after a short time in charge of the England team as interim coach.

The contract just signed will keep Southgate with the "Three Lions" until the end of Euro 2020. This 46-year-old military leader thereby becomes the 16th head coach to be appointed long-term in the history of the England team.

"I am extremely proud to be appointed England manager. However, I am also very aware that taking this job is just the beginning, now I want to make this job a success," Southgate said after signing the contract at FA headquarters.

Southgate was appointed as interim manager after his predecessor Sam Allardyce had to resign due to scandal at the end of September.

At first, the FA only intended to use the England U21 coach as a "fire extinguisher" while searching for a name with enough stature and weight to take over the "Three Lions". But after a period of unsuccessfully searching for their preferred candidate, while Southgate continued to score points in his interim role, the FA decided to choose a family member.

In his last four games as caretaker manager, Southgate and his players have been unbeaten, winning 2-0 against Malta, 3-0 against Scotland, 0-2 against Slovenia and 2-2 against Spain. The draw against Spain - after leading 2-0 and only equalising in the last seven minutes - is considered to be Southgate's decisive point with the FA's selection committee.

"I have enjoyed every minute of working with the players in the last four games and believe that England has great potential. I am determined to give my all to create a team that English people can be proud of, can enjoy the football we play and develop. For me, the hard work is only now beginning," Southgate added in his first speech in his new position.

With Southgate in temporary charge, England showed a new face, younger and more vibrant.

Southgate's first match as England head coach will be away at Westfallen Stadium, Dortmund, Germany on March 22.

Before taking charge of England, Southage was the England Under-21 coach and briefly managed Boro, with whom he was relegated from the Premier League to the Championship. As a player, Southgate played for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Boro, and represented France at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

In order to support Southgate, the FA is still retaining Steve Holland, who is currently working for both England and Chelsea. But according to Sky Sport, at the end of this season, Holland will leave Chelsea to fully support Southgate in leading the England team.
