(Baonghean.vn) - The court asked to temporarily suspend the trial to have time to remedy the situation and compensate the victims, but Ngo Thi Oanh went back on her word. At the trial, the defendant kept denying her crime and the court sentenced her to 10 years in prison.

On the morning of December 2, Nghe An Provincial People's Court continued to open the first-instance criminal trial of the defendants Ngo Thi Oanh (born in 1969), residing in Hung Dong commune; Nguyen Thi Thuy (born in 1975), residing in Hung Loc commune; Nguyen Thi Hang (born in 1985), residing in Le Loi ward (Vinh city) for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".

According to the indictment, the defendants’ criminal acts were as follows: Although they had no function or duty to find jobs, Oanh and Hang discussed and agreed to receive applications and money for jobs at the Provincial Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center and hospitals in Nghe An province. In which, Oanh would be responsible for finding workers, receiving applications and money from job applicants, while Hang was responsible for contacting and applying for jobs.

During the period from 2014 to 2018, the subjects fraudulently introduced themselves as acquaintances of leaders of the Nghe An Department of Health, so they would "get jobs" on long-term contracts or on the payroll at hospitals in Nghe An province to appropriate money from the victims.

The investigation agency determined that Ngo Thi Oanh had committed 10 frauds with a total amount of more than 2.7 billion VND. Of these, Nguyen Thi Hang committed 6 frauds, appropriating 420 million VND, Nguyen Thi Thuy committed 1 fraud, appropriating 210 million VND. Among the victims, the person who was defrauded the most money was Ms. Doan Thi LN with an amount of more than 1.1 billion VND.

After being prosecuted, Ngo Thi Oanh returned nearly 800 million VND to the victims.

Before this trial, on November 25, the provincial court brought the three defendants to trial. However, during the debate, Ngo Thi Oanh asked the court to give the defendant more time to remedy the consequences for the victims. Therefore, the court decided to temporarily suspend the trial.

At this trial, the victims said they had not received any compensation from defendant Oanh. Meanwhile, defendant Thuy had recovered all the money she had appropriated from the victims.

In the witness stand, defendant Oanh evaded the charge, claiming that she had successfully found jobs for two cases. The remaining cases agreed to switch from running errands to borrowing money. However, the victims said that none of them had found jobs as defendant Oanh had said. Two victims had been apprentices at the Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, but they had paid their own money to study for a short time, and have now quit their jobs.

The panel of judges determined that the defendants’ fraudulent behavior violated the law. Considering the case in its entirety, the court sentenced Ngo Thi Oanh to 10 years in prison, Nguyen Thi Hang to 3 years in prison, and Nguyen Thi Thuy to 15 months in prison, but with a suspended sentence, for the crime of “fraudulent appropriation of property.”
