The US dollar has strengthened in recent trading, reacting to dovish comments from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell on the economic situation.

Powell praised recent revisions to economic data, saying they eased some of the Fed’s concerns. He also predicted two more rate cuts this year, totaling 50 basis points, if the economy continues to grow as expected.

He warned that it could take a few years for housing inflation to fall to the desired level, but insisted the US economy remained strong.

Steve Englander, head of research at Standard Chartered Bank, commented that Powell expressed a tough view on the US economy.

According to CME Group's FedWatch Tool, the odds of the Fed cutting rates by another 50 basis points in November are now 35%, down from 37% before Powell's speech and 53% at the end of last week.

The euro fell 0.34 percent to $1.1125. The greenback gained 1.17 percent to 143.85 yen.

Fed Chairman Powell's speech comes ahead of the release of key US economic data, including manufacturing and services sector reports.

Marc Chandler from Bannockburn Global Forex predicts the Fed could cut rates another 50 basis points if the jobs report is not positive.

Economists expect 140,000 new jobs to be added in September and the unemployment rate to hold steady at 4.2%.

German inflation fell to its lowest level since February 2021 in September.

Major brokerages such as Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan predict the European Central Bank will cut interest rates by 0.2 basis points on October 17.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars gained after China's central bank cut interest rates and pumped money into the banking system.
