Ukraine 'divorces' the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

(Baonghean.vn) - Kiev is preparing all the final steps to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Nations.Independence (CIS) - Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Paven Klimkin said on the TV program "112 - Ukraine" on October 10.

Mr. Klimkin affirmed that although withdrawing from the CIS is not easy because there are many related agreements, “Ukraine’s responsibility is over. We are now completing the final work to resolve these agreements.”

Previously, in December 2014, after its launch, the new Ukrainian government announced its intention to terminate Ukraine's membership and participation in CIS organizations.

Ukraine leaving the CIS is something that will happen sooner or later. There is no denying the role of the CIS in maintaining peace, preventing economic bankruptcy, and ensuring security for member states.

However, compared to the successes, the limitations and weaknesses in the CIS are somewhat more numerous. Some CIS countries have expressed their desire to escape from the "sphere of influence" of Russia, leaning towards the US and Western countries. They have begun to adjust their military mechanism according to NATO standards. The economic integration process of the CIS is slow, and the role of the CIS in the world economic forum is also quite vague.

From the initial membership of 12 countries, the members later showed less interest in the CIS, with Georgia in 2009 completely separating from the bloc.
