Vietnam - Cambodia hold first Defense Strategy Dialogue

On the morning of October 19, at the headquarters of the Cambodian Ministry of Defense in the capital Phnom Penh, the first defense strategy dialogue between Vietnam and Cambodia took place.

The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense delegation was led by Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defense. The Cambodian Ministry of National Defense delegation was led by General Neang Phat, Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defense.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh said that this first defense strategic dialogue is extremely important in the context of many fluctuations in the world's political and security situation, directly affecting the relationship between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh said: “The armies and people of the two countries have stood side by side in the struggle to regain independence for each country; the struggle to eliminate the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime, regain peace and development for Cambodia and stability for Vietnam. In peacetime, our armies continue to cooperate to protect peace, protect the homeland, and at the same time contribute to strengthening solidarity and friendship between the two countries.”

At the dialogue, the two sides had in-depth discussions on the world and regional situations and the situation in each country, and shared their views on issues related to and affecting the security and defense of the two countries.

The two sides also discussed contents and measures to deepen bilateral defense cooperation, making it more effective and practical; contributing to consolidating and developing the relationship of "good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability" between the armies and peoples of the two countries.

The two sides recognized that both Vietnam and Cambodia are facing opportunities and challenges when the ASEAN Community is officially established at the end of this year. Therefore, strengthening cooperation in the defense sector in particular and other sectors between Vietnam and Cambodia will help each country improve its capacity and overall strength in the process of deep integration in the region.

For his part, General Neang Phat said that over the past years, the defense relationship in particular as well as the comprehensive friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Vietnam have been continuously strengthened and developed well.

General Neang Phat emphasized that the Cambodian leaders and people always remember the valuable assistance of the Vietnamese Army and people in the overthrow of the Pol Pot genocidal regime in the past, helping Cambodia revive and develop as it is today./.
