Vietnam won a gold medal at the Asian Informatics Olympiad

All 7 members of the Vietnamese delegation won prizes, and were one of 7 countries and territories with gold medals.

On May 21, the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) announced that student Pham Duc Thang, grade 12, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University) won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Informatics Olympiad.

Four students Hoang Xuan Nhat (grade 12, Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University), Nguyen Khanh (grade 12, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences), Trinh Huu Gia Phuc (grade 11, Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa) and Nguyen Minh Tung (grade 11, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences) won silver medals.

The two students who won bronze medals were Nguyen Hoang Hai Minh (grade 12, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences) and Duong Quoc Hung (grade 12, Thang Long High School for the Gifted, Lam Dong).).

The 2018 Asian Olympiad in Informatics was held online with 586 contestants from 31 countries and territories participating, Russia was the host country. The Vietnamese team, consisting of 15 contestants, took the online exam on May 13 at the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

According to the Organizing Committee's regulations, 187 candidates are eligible to participate in the award, of which 7 students are from Vietnam. Notably, Vietnam is one of 7 countries and territories with gold medals, along with China, Russia, Bangladesh, South Korea, Taiwan and Georgia.

Based on the unofficial rankings, Vietnam ranked third after China and Russia. In 2017, Vietnam won only five silver medals and one bronze medal, ranking seventh in the overall standings.
