In the 90th minute, the Mandalar Thiri stadium exploded after the referee pointed to the penalty spot for the home team. In contrast to the joy of the Myanmar players, disappointment was evident on the faces of the girls in red, who thought the match had ended early after 16 minutes of play. Win Theingi Tun did not miss the opportunity to put Myanmar up 3-2.
Back to the beginning of the match, when the Vietnamese players completely controlled the game. Coach Mai Duc Chung's team scored two consecutive goals in the 15th and 16th minutes thanks to Huynh Nhu and Tuyet Dung. Leading by two goals with a dominant game in the first half, no one thought that Myanmar would be able to recover. However, the efforts of the home team and the decline of Vietnam almost created a spectacular comeback. Myanmar scored three goals in the second half, including a double from Win Theingi Tun and the remaining goal belonging to May Thu Kyaw.
However, like a dramatic action movie where viewers can never predict the ending, Vietnam slipped through the narrow door after the home team took the lead. Just a few minutes after the third goal, Huynh Nhu brought a penalty for Vietnam in the last seconds. At the 11 meter mark, Minh Nguyet showed the mettle of a veteran when she coolly equalized 3-3.
As if resurrected from the dead, Vietnam pushed up their attack formation in the two extra periods and created countless chances but were unlucky enough to score against Myanmar. Meanwhile, Myanmar, down to 10 men due to a red card at the end of the second half, succeeded in dragging Vietnam into a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, the home team lacked courage and luck and had to accept a 4-5 defeat in the penalty shootout.
A hard-fought victory over Myanmar secured Vietnam a place in the final of the AFF Women’s Championship. Vietnam’s opponent is none other than Thailand, who beat U20 Australia 2-1 in the first semi-final.
