(Baonghean.vn) – His wife died 2 days after giving birth. Ho Va Xo in Tien Tieu village (Nam Can commune – Ky Son) suffered a stroke and lost his ability to work, leaving him to raise a 3-month-old child.

We arrived at Tien Tieu village (Nam Can commune - Ky Son) on a day in early September. The heavy rain made Nam Can cold. The children had to wear warm clothes to go to school. Sitting by the door, a man over 40 years old hugged the child tightly and looked into the distance. That was Ho Va Xo, one of the poorest households in this border commune.

Sitting in a dilapidated house made of simple planks, Ho Va Xo spoke to us with his limited Kinh language. We had to rely on an officer from Nam Can Border Guard Station to translate for us to fully understand the tragic story of Va Xo's family. Born in 1974 in a poor family, Va Xo got married after throwing pao in the spring. The couple's life was poor but warm. They had two daughters, Ho Y Gau and Ho Y Do. Ho Y Gau is now settled in Huoi Tu commune, and Y Do has just finished grade 12 at Nghe An province's Ethnic Minority High School.

In 2015, disaster struck, Mr. Ho Va Xo suffered a stroke and had to stay in one place for many months. All his wealth was spent on medicine and treatment. In June of this year, his wife gave birth to another child, Ho Ba Tenh. But unfortunately, after 2 days of giving birth, his wife suddenly passed away.

Ho Y Do has been an excellent student for many years. In this land, Y Do is one of the few students who passed the entrance exam to the provincial boarding school. It was thought that after finishing grade 12, Y Do would be able to take the entrance exam to a university, but all of his dreams went up in smoke when his father lost his ability to work and his mother suddenly passed away. He had to quit his job to pursue his dream of studying and work to support his father and younger brother. Every day, he had to work hard in the fields to earn enough corn and vegetables to get by.

To help his father and younger brother, Ho Y Do (far left) had to drop out of school to work to support his father and younger brother.

Mr. Ho Va Xo sadly said: "There were many days when I saw Ba Tenh so hungry, without breast milk, I had to go begging for milk cartons but couldn't do anything." The man's tears seemed to dry up and roll down his skinny cheeks. Seeing little Tenh limp in his father's arms in the cold of the border land was truly pitiful.

Asked about his future plans, Ho Y Do spoke for his father: "I will probably try to work at a company to bring money home to support my father and me, otherwise the whole family will starve to death." Y Do's voice dropped, filled with anxiety.
