Heavy rain appeared in Vinh City starting at around 12 midnight on October 9th, the heavy rain lasted all night causing almost all roads to be deeply flooded, many households had their houses flooded up to 30-40 cm.

Vinh City currently has 3 drainage pumping stations: Cau Tri, the Southern pumping station and the Southwest pumping station, of which the Southern pumping station is the most important drainage pumping station of the city with a capacity of 57,000 m³/h, 6 pumps continuously pump water into Vinh River when water in the inner city exceeds the allowable level.

However, at around 7:25 a.m. on October 10, 3 out of 6 pumps had technical problems, so only 3 pumps were operating, greatly affecting water drainage.

“We regularly maintain and repair the pumps, but this rain was so intense that the pumps were running continuously from 8 p.m. last night until this morning, causing an incident. At around 9:30 a.m., the repairs were completed and the drainage work is still continuing,” said Mr. Tran Van Cam, Deputy Director of Vinh Urban Infrastructure Development and Management Joint Stock Company. At the same time, the sluices to the Vinh River were also opened.

However, at the beginning of October 10, the water level outside the river and inside was not much different, so the discharge gates were almost ineffective.

Currently, units are closely monitoring and checking the operating procedures as well as the capacity of pumping stations to have timely adjustment plans./.
