Historic flooding in residential areas along Vinh River after storm No. 10
Hundreds of households in Yen Giang block, Truong Vinh ward were flooded to unprecedented depths after the recent storm No. 10. Not only causing property damage, this flood also completely disrupted the lives of the people here.
On the morning of September 30, at Yen Giang block - a residential area located close to the southern end of Cua Tien bridge, we witnessed people hurriedly moving furniture, raising tables, chairs, and vehicles.
Pham Hong Thai Street and many small alleys south of Cua Tien Bridge were submerged in water, some sections reaching almost knee-deep. Many households had to cover their doors with tarps to prevent the water from rushing into their homes.
Ms. Pham Thi Tam, a pickled cucumber seller at Vinh market, is still in shock: “During the recent storm No. 5, the water flooded into the house, up to the knees, but then gradually receded. I thought it would be the same this time. However, at dawn on September 30, the Vinh River suddenly rose, more than 1 meter high, leaving the whole family unable to react. All the goods were submerged in water and damaged.”
Not only Ms. Tam's family, many other households also fell into the same situation. Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, residing at 41 Pham Hong Thai Street, lamented: "We are used to flooding every time it rains heavily, but this time the water is too deep. This is the first time I have seen the water rise so high."
According to statistics of Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh - Head of Yen Giang block, out of a total of 190 households, 160 households are submerged in water.
“Even my house, which has never been flooded before, is now flooded more than half a meter. This morning, the water continued to rise, forcing households to quickly move their belongings and evacuate their properties. This is truly a historic flood for our block,” Mr. Minh shared.
The cause was determined to be that after the storm, the Lam River rose, flowing through the culvert into the Vinh River, causing the water level to rise suddenly. The Yen Giang block is located in a low-lying area, close to the river, so it was heavily affected.
Faced with that situation, the ward authorities urgently mobilized militia to use sandbags to block the flow, and at the same time support people to evacuate their properties. "If the water continues to rise, we will consider plans to evacuate people and set up a makeshift pumping station to drain the water, reducing damage to the people" - Mr. Nguyen Son Tung - Deputy Head of the Urban Infrastructure Department of Truong Vinh Ward said.
