5 'problems' and how to fix them on motorbikes in cold weather

(Baonghean.vn) - Cold weather has a significant impact on the details and components of motorbikes, causing the vehicle's operations to no longer be as accurate as in the summer days. Therefore, when using a motorbike in the winter, you are likely to encounter the following errors, and if you know how to handle these problems, they are no longer serious.

1. Difficult to start, uneven noise

In cold weather, the ability of fuel to evaporate is reduced, making the fuel-air mixture often not rich enough (lean) compared to a hot engine or warm weather. Therefore, the ratio of air and fuel at the carburetor directly affects the vehicle's ability to start in cold weather.

The cause of a motorbike being difficult to start often comes from the carburetor and the ignition area is affected.

In some cases, when the weather is cold or the humidity is high, the amount of air in the engine condenses into small water droplets in the carburetor and fuel line. Therefore, the amount of air needed to start the car is lacking, causing difficulty starting.

To fix this problem, close the choke to supply more fuel to the combustion chamber and make the engine easier to start. After the engine is running smoothly, open the choke back to its original state.

If the vehicle is left idle for 6 hours or more during the day, turn off the ignition and kick start the vehicle before starting the engine.

2. "Jittery" when first operating

With motorbikes, the phenomenon of "jerking" when first operating in cold weather is quite common, especially with manual transmission motorbikes.

The reason is that when the engine is running in a cold state: low temperature reduces the lubricating ability of the oil. At the same time, the combustion chamber temperature has not reached the required temperature. And this is also the time when engine wear is at a high level.

Solution: Every morning, let the vehicle run in idle mode for about 1-2 minutes. When you turn the throttle, if the engine runs smoothly and evenly, that means the engine and oil have reached the required temperature.

Do not immediately turn the throttle all the way when the car has just started, this can cause the car to choke, stall, and also cause the car to quickly break down.

With a scooter, you need to keep the throttle steady when starting, then gradually increase the throttle. With a motorbike, you should start in 1st gear, gradually increase to 2nd gear, and run at least the first 1 km in 3rd gear, then increase to 4th gear.

3. Car emits black smoke

When the car has black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, it means that there is some unburned gasoline. This problem can have many different causes, so check accordingly.

- When starting the engine using the starter system (need choke, or enrichment circuit when starting). Then you forget to close this system or this system is stuck, which may lead to black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.

- The air filter is clogged or dirty, resulting in insufficient air intake to mix with gasoline, causing the fuel mixture to have too much gasoline and not enough to completely burn the mixture, causing black smoke to come out of the exhaust pipe.

- The fuel system (carburetor) has a problem, so it cannot control the amount of gasoline and air mixed into the mixture, so the mixture ratio is not suitable, causing incomplete combustion, leading to black smoke.

4. Hard brake lever

Normally, when the weather turns cold, the dry air dries out the throttle and brake oil, making it difficult to use and unsafe to operate.

To handle this phenomenon, you should combine two methods:

- Do not let the brake cable get too tight.

If the brake line is too tight, when the hand is cold and loses feeling, the braking force is often stronger than usual; too tight brake line also makes sudden braking more likely, causing safety loss.

- Brake line and brake system maintenance

Maintain and lubricate the entire vehicle regularly. Flush and lubricate whenever brake and throttle cables become heavy or stuck.

In addition, brake fluid also needs to be replaced if the brake fluid has been used for too long, or the brake pads are old, worn, lose braking force or the brake disc is warped...

5. Flooded car

When the vehicle stalls due to flooding, do not attempt to restart it (water may have entered the cylinder). At this point, turn off the ignition, put the vehicle on the main stand, remove the spark plug, and kick the cylinder a few times to let all the water drain out, then reinsert the spark plug to kick start.

If the car does not stall, check the engine oil immediately when you get home. If the oil changes color (the color of the oil changes depending on the level of water in it, from yellow to milky white), you must flush the engine and replace the oil. If the oil does not change color, you should check it again after 1-2 days (some cars do not change color immediately, but a day later).

More frequent inspection and maintenance than the standard schedule is recommended when driving during cold, rainy seasons.
