8 foods containing 'toxic fat' that you don't know about
Since the summer of 2015, the US Food Administration has officially banned the use of trans fats in processed foods. Trans fats can reduce good cholesterol, increase bad cholesterol, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, this ban was not implemented until 2018 to completely remove it from all foods. And currently there are still quite a lot of foods containing this dangerous fat. Manufacturers can label foods as trans fat-free when the amount of this fat is less than 0.5g per portion. But if you eat a lot, you can take in more than 2g per meal.
Additionally, 87% of processed foods also contain hydrolyzed oils, the most common form of trans fat.
There are foods that are high in trans fats that you may not even know about, especially the eight below.
1. Popcorn
Regular popcorn is fine because it's a whole grain, but processed popcorn is often loaded with trans fat oils. Some brands contain up to 5g of trans fat per serving, which is double the World Health Organization's recommended amount.
2. Sandwich
Pre-made breakfast sandwiches with meat and other ingredients contain about 1g of trans fat per serving.

3. Cream with coffee
Even though each teaspoon of ice cream contains less than 0.5g of trans fat, which is why the manufacturer says the ice cream is fat-free, it's unlikely you'll be able to consume just a spoonful at a time.
4. Frozen cakes
Take birthday cakes, for example. These cakes rely on trans fats to maintain their texture and longevity, without becoming soggy or runny. Each small portion of cake contains about 0.5-0.8g of trans fat.
5. Canned ice cream
Hydrolyzed oil is often one of the top ingredients in packaged ice creams. About two teaspoons of ice cream contain about 0.75g of trans fat.
6. Breakfast cereal bar, energy supplement
Not all of these bars are good. 100% of the bars that say "0g trans fat" actually contain it. Look for hydrolyzed oil when you buy.
