According to the World Health Organization, one in nine deaths worldwide is related to indoor or outdoor air pollution. Turkmenistan has the highest per capita death rate due to air pollution, followed by Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, and China.
The report focuses on outdoor air pollution, which kills about 3 million people each year. The aim of the report is to inform policymakers and the public about the risks posed by air pollution.
The World Health Organization has no evidence yet whether wearing face masks, as is common in some parts of Asia, helps reduce the inhalation of fine particles, according to Dr. Carlos Dora, WHO's coordinator for environment and health.
China ranks 6th among countries with the highest per capita death rate due to air pollution.
Although the country has taken many measures to improve air quality, coal-fired factories, burning coal and firewood for cooking and heating in households and the transportation sector are still the main sources of pollution in China./.
