Amid an online petition calling for a re-run of the referendum that has garnered more than 3.5 million signatures and speculation that the government could hold another referendum after agreeing new terms of relations with the EU, the British Prime Minister's spokesman made it clear that this was not an option on the table.
Prime Minister Cameron chaired his first cabinet meeting since the historic referendum on June 27. Ministers agreed to set up a new government-affiliated civil service to plan options in Britain’s renegotiations with the EU.
However, formal negotiations will not begin until the UK triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - which sets in motion the two-year process of leaving the EU. Prime Minister Cameron announced his resignation after the referendum and said the new prime minister would initiate the process.
Regarding the search for a successor to Prime Minister Cameron, local press sources said that the nomination of the person to take over the position of British Prime Minister will begin tomorrow, June 29, and end at noon the same day.
Nominations must be approved by the full membership of the 1922 Committee of ruling Conservative MPs.
Potential candidates to replace Mr Cameron include former London Mayor Boris Johnson; British Home Secretary Theresa May; and British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.
The new Prime Minister will be appointed on September 2 and Mr Cameron will hand over the keys to No. 10 Downing Street to the new owner on the same day.
