Just staying in the Intensive Care Unit for a few hours, one can feel the pressure that the medical team here puts on every day. Working in a stressful environment with patients at high risk of death, but Master, Doctor Pham Van Phuc does not feel pressured, "dreaming and loving to work in medicine since I was in school, until I entered the lecture hall, I always feel lucky to have pursued my passion. Identifying the difficulties of the profession, especially when choosing the Intensive Care Unit, I always have to be quick and calm to handle situations, so I do not feel pressured but always want to contribute my youth and the knowledge I have learned".
Having been used to working and handling patients in a "tense as a bowstring" situation, however, when directly participating in the treatment and care for patients,Covid-19 patientsThe feeling of fatigue, anxiety, and nervousness is always present in every staff member, doctor, nurse, and doctor Phuc.

“Many cases made us stressed, such as: First, patient 19 (patient 17's uncle), after being weaned off ECMO (artificial heart and lung device), the patient was progressing well, but at around 1am on April 5, the patient's condition worsened, with circulatory arrest three times. Red alert was raised overnight to consult with the Professional Council, everyone was very stressed to make a life-or-death decision. Patient 26, a 69-year-old British man, had a history of stroke and hemiplegia, and was put on a ventilator for 14 days before recovering.
At the time patient 812 (male, 62 years old) contracted Covid-19, he was one of the most severe Covid-19 patients in Hanoi. Upon admission, he was in a serious condition, requiring oxygen and treatment in the Emergency Department. Patient 812's lung function was damaged by about 70%. When the patient was transferred to the Emergency Resuscitation Department, his lung condition was very serious.
After 2 weeks of treatment, the patient gradually recovered and was removed from the ventilator. Severe cases are very scary, just a little carelessness can lead to death. During many shifts, I ate while watching the camera, if a patient had a problem, I would stop eating and run in to see how the patient was. Luckily, in the fight against Covid-19, all the patients I treated were cured," Dr. Phuc recalled.
The fight against Covid - 19
Doctor Pham Van Phuc is one of the people who performed ECMO (artificial heart and lung device) for patient 19 (in April 2020), the most severe Covid-19 patient in the North in the early stages of the epidemic. Doctor Phuc, along with the team of doctors and medical staff in the department, successfully implemented many advanced techniques to treat severe patients such as: Advanced mechanical ventilation, molecular adsorption blood filtration (Cytokines filtration), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), thanks to which all critically ill patients admitted to the department were cured, including very severe patients with multiple organ failure and circulatory arrest who were still saved. This result is of great significance, contributing to the completion of the epidemic prevention mission of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in particular and the Vietnamese health sector in general.

During the two times participating in the work of preventing and fighting the Covid-19 epidemic, for Dr. Phuc, it was an experience of life after marriage, feeling the love of family. “The first time, right after the Lunar New Year, my daughter, who was not yet 2 years old, had to be left with her grandmother in her hometown Nghi Loc. The couple returned to Hanoi, the wife worked in a bank, the time was stressful but when she had time, she went back to her hometown to visit her children. During this time, I saw that my wife was really resilient, she did not complain, she just called to encourage her husband to work with peace of mind.”
During his time participating in the prevention and control of the Covid-19 epidemic, as well as his time working at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Master, Doctor Pham Van Phuc always left an impression of his enthusiasm, dedication to work as well as his daily care for patients. A son of Nghe An with a bright face and a friendly smile has always been the image of a doctor for the people when contacting, examining and treating patients.
“Being able to fulfill my dream and treat patients with my own hands is something that always makes me feel lucky and happy. Especially, directly participating in the “war” against Covid-19, I feel really proud, overcoming myself, as well as overcoming seemingly impossible difficulties with my colleagues.”
