Nghe An General Friendship Hospital: 5-hour 'race' to reattach a patient's severed arm
(Baonghean.vn) - Doctors at Nghe An General Hospital have just successfully performed microsurgery to reattach the arm that was severed due to a work accident for a 47-year-old female patient residing in Ha Tinh province.
At 3:30 p.m. on March 23, 2023,Nghe An General Friendship Hospitaladmitted patient HTB (47 years old, residing in Thuan Thien commune, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province) in a coma, acute hemorrhagic shock due to a severed arm.

Investigating the patient's family's medical history, it was learned that: At 1:30 p.m. the same day, patient B. had a work accident, a brick cutter severed 1/3 of his right arm.
After the accident, patient B. was transferred to Can Loc District General Hospital (Ha Tinh) for emergency treatment: pain relief, IV fluids, ligation to stop bleeding in the central part... The severed arm was cleaned, put in a plastic bag filled with 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution, and put in a Styrofoam box with ice for preservation.
After receiving the patient, doctors at Nghe An General Hospital intubated and resuscitated him against shock. At the same time, the hospital's on-duty team activated the internal red alert; organized a consultation with related departments and determined to perform emergency surgery to reattach the severed arm.
Dr. Nguyen Duc Vuong, Head of the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics, said: Reattaching a severed limb is an extremely urgent emergency surgery. All work must be done quickly and simultaneously to reduce the dead time (golden time) to save the limb when it is no longer nourished by the body. In the case of patient B., it was already the 3rd hour.

We consulted with the relevant departments while resuscitating and transferring to the operating room. To shorten the limb's death time, the hospital mobilized 10 doctors from the Microvascular Surgery team, the Trauma - Orthopedics team, the Anesthesia and Resuscitation team, to perform debridement of crushed tissue, bone fusion, vascular grafting, tendon and nerve connection, and compartment release...
After 5 hours of racing against time, doctors successfully reattached the arm of the HTB patient.
After the anastomosis, patient B. received intensive treatment. Currently, the patient was transferred to the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics for monitoring and has shown many good developments: The patient is awake and responsive. The wound has little pus, the pulse is clear, the blood elasticity is clear, and the limb is warm and pink./.
