Dead fish in West Lake: Deputy Prime Minister assigns Ministry of Public Security to investigate
Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh directed relevant agencies such as the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment... to join in investigating the cause of fish deaths in West Lake.
At the regular government press conference yesterday afternoon, Minister and Head of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung assessed the mass fish deaths in West Lake as a rare event that has never happened before.
“Even very large silver carp, common carp, grass carp, and bighead carp all died en masse, dying on a large scale, causing public outrage,” said the Minister.

The lake has an area of about 500 hectares with 24 discharge gates. As soon as the above phenomenon occurred, on the evening of October 2, Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung and relevant agencies went by canoe to West Lake to check the situation.
Mr. Mai Tien Dung informed that the Prime Minister also assigned Hanoi to inspect and clarify the above incident. Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh requested the Ministry of Public Security, Natural Resources and Environment, Science and Technology, and the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to clarify the cause of the fish deaths.

“As soon as we have the results, we will make them public. The Prime Minister’s spirit is to ask for clarification on where the discharge comes from, whether there are any problems with the water source… Some people say the fish died due to lack of oxygen, so what caused the lack of oxygen must be clarified,” the Minister emphasized.
According to statistics, from October 1st to now, more than 200 tons of fish have died in West Lake. The Hanoi People's Committee has directed Tay Ho district and relevant agencies to take measures to handle and collect dead fish to limit pollution, take water samples for analysis, determine the cause, and the preventive health agency has also sprayed anti-toxic and disinfectant chemicals.
