Warning: Every hour, 6 women are murdered by someone they know.
A United Nations study recently released said that more than 50% of women murdered in 2017 worldwide were victims of domestic violence, warning that home has become "the most dangerous place for women".
In a report released on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said that of the 87,000 cases of women killed in 2017, about 50,000 (58%) were victims of their husbands, boyfriends or family members. This is equivalent to 6 women being killed by someone they know every hour.

Women continue to pay the highest price for gender inequality, sexism and traditional beliefs. Women are also the most vulnerable to abuse from family members and relatives. The fact that women continue to be victims of domestic violence more than men shows that there is no solution to gender inequality in the family.
Africa and the Americas are the regions where women are most at risk of domestic violence leading to death. Specifically, about 3.1 out of every 100,000 women in Africa are victims of domestic violence. The rate in the Americas is 1.6, while in Oceania and Asia it is 1.3 and 0.9, respectively. The lowest rate is recorded in Europe, with 0.7 per 100,000 women.According to UNODC, in recent years the fight against this problem has not achieved significant progress despite the existence of laws and programmes on eliminating violence against women.
UNODC believes that men need to be part of the solution, starting with early education for men about protecting and respecting women.
