Actively prevent and combat violence and abuse against women and children

On the morning of November 15, in Thai Hoa town, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee held a launching ceremony for the Month of Action for Gender Equality and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence in 2018 with the theme "Proactively preventing and combating violence and abuse against women and children".

Attending the ceremony were comrade Le Minh Thong - Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; representatives of leaders of departments, branches, localities in the province and a large number of people from all walks of life in Thai Hoa town.

In recent years, Nghe An has done well in gender equality and achieved many good results: The proportion of women in the province accounts for more than 50% of the workforce; the proportion of female National Assembly deputies is 30.8%; the proportion of female People's Council deputies at the provincial level is 27.5%, at the district level is 29.2%, at the commune level is 28.1%; there is a 26% proportion of female business owners...

In addition to the achieved results, the work of gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in the province still faces many difficulties and challenges: Many people are still indifferent to violence, especially against women and children; collective awareness has not been built to fight against violations of the law related to violence against women and children.

Some Party committees, authorities, and a number of cadres and leaders have not paid due attention to this work; there are still phenomena of early marriage, violence and abuse against women and children; the increasing number of divorces, cohabitation without marriage and premarital abortions have left serious consequences for families and society, in which the most vulnerable are still women and children.

Launching the month of action for gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in 2018 with the theme "Proactively preventing and combating violence and abuse against women and children", comrade Le Minh Thong stated: The month of action is deployed with the meaning of mobilizing the synchronous participation of agencies, organizations and all people, especially men, in eliminating gender inequality and preventing violence and abuse against women and children.

After this launching ceremony, Nghe An will focus on strongly implementing a communication campaign on gender equality and prevention of gender-based violence in the province./.
