Men who go to bed early may have healthier sperm

Research shows that men who sleep 6 hours a night have 25% less sperm count than men who get 8 hours of sleep.

For men planning to become fathers, going to bed before midnight may be the key to healthier sperm.

This study found that men who went to bed between 8-10pm had the best sperm motility, which means the sperm 'swim' better and are more likely to fertilise.

On the other hand, men who go to bed after midnight have lower sperm counts and their sperm die faster.

Sleeping less than 6 hours will make this worse, as will sleeping more than 9 hours.

Researchers from Harbin Medical University in China said late nights and inadequate rest were both harmful because they increased anti-sperm antibodies - a protein produced by the immune system that can destroy healthy sperm.

Previous research has shown that men who sleep six hours a night have 25% lower sperm counts than men who get eight hours of sleep.

In this study, the team monitored the sleep patterns of 981 healthy men who were advised to start going to bed between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., between 10 p.m. and midnight, or after midnight.

They were also asked to set their alarms to sleep less than 6 hours, between 7 and 8 hours, or more than 9 hours.

Scientists took regular semen samples to check sperm count, shape and motility.
