Fishing for crabs near shore, Nghe An fishermen earn millions every day

(Baonghean.vn) - In addition to fishing on large ships, nearshore crab fishing has helped fishermen in Quynh Luu (Nghe An) earn a high income of 3 - 5 million VND/day without having to make a large investment.
Quynh Luu is the locality with the largest total number of boats in the province. In addition to offshore fishing with high-value seafood, Quynh Luu fishermen also preserve their ancestors' traditional profession by fishing close to shore, hunting valuable specialties.

Arriving at Quynh Nghia sea in the early morning, this is the time when boats return to shore after about 3 hours of fishing at sea. Unlike other large ships with large engines, nearshore fishing is simple with only a small boat with an engine, but when going out to sea about 2 - 3 km, you can catch many types of seafood, earning millions of VND/day.

Fisherman Ho Van Minh in Quynh Nghia commune said, we go to sea all year round with 5-6 jobs such as: fishing for herring, silver pomfret, squirrel fish, mantis shrimp, crabs... Currently, it is crab fishing season so most fishermen have switched to this job. Crab fishing is in season from July to October of the lunar calendar, fishermen go fishing from around 4am until 7am then return to shore. On lucky days, many boats catch about 100kg of crabs, earning 8 million VND/day.

With many years of experience at sea, fisherman Nguyen Minh Hung shared: During this season, there are many crabs, they often feed during the day, so fishermen often hunt them from dawn. Each boat going out to sea, fishermen are equipped with 2-3 crab nets, each net is pulled up after about 2-3 hours of casting the net, collecting many quintals of crabs for an income of about 3-5 million VND/day.

For specialties caught near shore, crabs are of high value and are purchased in large quantities by restaurants and traders. Currently, the selling price at the wharf for type 1 crabs is 250,000 VND/kg, type 2 crabs are priced at 150,000 - 170,000 VND/kg... After fishermen catch crabs from the sea, traders will purchase them, store them in tanks and distribute them to restaurants in and outside the province.

Currently, in Quynh Luu district, there are about 300 boats specializing in catching crabs; concentrated in the communes of Tien Thuy, Quynh Nghia, Quynh Luong, Quynh Bang... Thanks to this profession, fishermen in the coastal area of Quynh Luu have a better life, while preserving the traditional profession of their ancestors.
