On August 15, the People's Court of Can Tho City, at the appeal hearing, rejected the appeal for a reduced sentence, upheld the first instance judgment, and sentenced Au Cong Bao (35 years old, residing in Thot Not district) to one year and three months in prison for theft of property and nine months in prison for receiving property obtained through criminal acts. The total sentence the defendant must serve is two years in prison.

According to the records, at about 1:00 a.m. on September 4, 2015, Bao discovered an ancient incense burner in Mr. NT M's house near his house, so he had the idea of stealing it to sell for money.

Bao "mobilized" Phan Thanh Tu, Dang Thanh Phong and Di Thien Ly to steal the incense burner for him. After that, Bao asked Tu to hide the incense burner in the motel and find a seller. When the police checked the motel, they discovered many strange properties in Bao's room such as a metal iron, incense burner, metal lamp...

Through valuation, the dark yellow metal incense burner with three legs inlaid with unicorns and a round base is worth 2 million VND.

In addition, the investigation also determined that Tu is the grandson of Mrs. NTE. Mrs. E. knew that Mrs. E. had a ROCERS stove (ancient kerosene stove) manufactured in 1964 and a canteen containing distilled water in the altar cabinet. On October 2, 2015, Tu stole the above items and gave them to Bao. Bao knew that Tu had stolen the items but still kept them. The police seized the two items above and a gold-colored metal bell from Bao's house.

At the first instance trial, the People's Court of Thot Not district sentenced Bao to one year and three months in prison, Phong to one year and six months in prison, Tu to one year in prison, and Ly to six months in prison, all for theft of property; Bao to nine months in prison for receiving property obtained through criminal activity.

The appeal requested a reduction in sentence and requested a re-evaluation of the property stolen and kept by the defendant. The court explained that the Thot Not district's valuation of the property stolen and kept by the defendant was accurate. That is not to mention the antique value of these items. That is the reason the defendant left them in the house and rented room so that he could find someone who knows how to collect antiques to sell them at a higher price. The appeal court held that the first instance judgment was appropriate and there was no basis for mitigating the defendant.
