"Modified" car rims (car rims) can still be inspected if they follow the manufacturer's published specifications.

A leader of the Vietnam Register said that car owners can change one wheel (wheel, rim) to another, but according to the manufacturer's technical specifications and still be registered according to regulations.

“For the same car model, the manufacturer can announce many different wheel parameters, as long as they are within the manufacturer's announced limits. If the wheel "modification" changes the parameters, not according to the manufacturer's technical specifications, it will not be registered.”This person said.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel modification, also known as wheel modification, is a way to change the original diameter of the wheel and tire compared to the manufacturer's standards. Wheel modification will make the car look stronger and more attractive, creating a highlight compared to cars of the same type. In addition, wheel modification is also useful in moving, helping the car to travel on special terrains more easily...

If the wheel rim is adjusted properly, it will also bring many benefits to the driver when operating on steep roads, winding roads or inconvenient locations. Because the wheel rim adjustment helps the vehicle have a large contact area with the road surface, it will help improve the vehicle's performance, help the vehicle turn easily, and brake more safely...

Is it illegal to modify car rims?

If the wheel "modification" changes the parameters and does not comply with the manufacturer's technical specifications, without a license, it will not be inspected and will be fined during the move. According to Decree 100/2019/ND-CP, Article 16, Clause 3 and Clause 7, the driver of the vehicle with modified rims will be fined from 800,000 to 1,000,000 VND, and the vehicle owner must restore the original condition for the modified items.

Are car rims inspected?

According to the Decrees of the Department of Registration, vehicle owners can change this rim to another rim but according to the manufacturer's technical specifications, they will still be inspected according to regulations. Because for the same vehicle line, the manufacturer can announce many different wheel parameters, as long as they are within the manufacturer's published limits. If the "modification" of the rim changes the parameters and changes the rim and tire size not in accordance with regulations, it will not be inspected.

Vehicle inspection units will base on the original technical documents provided by the manufacturer to conduct inspection and registration. If incorrect, the registration will be refused.

In addition to being fined for traffic violations and not being inspected, rim modification also makes you ineligible for voluntary physical damage insurance. Likewise, when unexpected traffic incidents occur, changing the rim-tire parameters will be refused compensation by the insurance company.

How to modify car rims and still get vehicle inspection

To ensure both the fun of tuning and peace of mind when registering, car owners should note:

- Declare new vehicle specifications to the Registry. These specifications will be added to the vehicle specifications, making the change of rims and tires completely legal.

- However, the change procedures are not simple. Moreover, not all car manufacturers allow this change. The way to determine which car manufacturers allow the change is that you need to directly perform the following lookups:

For European car manufacturers: You need to contact the manufacturer for support information related to changing rims and tires. This change may be applied to some manufacturers, some manufacturers do not or will have their own regulations.

For other car brands: Contact the Department of Vehicle Registration to check if your car brand is within the permitted range of rim and tire modifications before making changes. This will help you avoid making illegal changes and being fined.

- To quickly carry out the procedures, the vehicle owner must be the one to carry out the procedures and must fully prepare the relevant documents. The necessary documents are the driver's license, vehicle registration, and information about the parameters before and after the change.
