Changing wishes for grade 10: Last minute changes
Today (June 11) is the deadline to change your 10th grade entrance exam preferences. Despite careful consideration, changing preferences is still difficult for many parents.
"Brain-weighing" days
"Yesterday afternoon, a parent came to the counseling room and sat with us all afternoon. After meeting the subject teacher directly and carefully calculating, we encouraged the mother and child to return home and reconsider changing their wishes. Up to now, the family has decided to keep their first wish at Huynh Thuc Khang High School as originally registered" - teacher Dang Thi Sen - Vice Principal of Hung Dung Secondary School shared about cases of parents requesting to change their wishes.

Since June 8, the admissions consulting room of Hung Dung Secondary School (Vinh City) has always had parents and students coming to ask for advice on changing their children's preferences. This morning, parents who came for advice all had children with quite high scores, even above 24 or 25 points.
The parent of a male student in grade 9C said that although his son scored 25 points in the three test subjects, the family is still not confident in registering him for NV1 at Huynh Thuc Khang High School, "I am afraid he might miscalculate. Moreover, the standard of candidates at this school is very high, so I am worried that he will not have enough points."
By the end of this morning, 127/397 grade 9 students who registered for the grade 10 entrance exam at Hung Dung High School had come to school with their parents to change their preferences. Of these, only 2 students transferred their preferences from lower-ranked schools to Huynh Thuc Khang High School.
The rest of the students all changed their preferences to lower schools than the initial registration period.

After nearly 5 days of directly working with the school's admissions consulting board, Ms. Dang Thi Sen - Vice Principal of the school said that it was truly a "stressful" 5 days.
My parent said she lost 2kg because her child only got 24 points, the "split" between passing and failing at Huynh Thuc Khang High School. Many other parents, although their children's test scores were quite good, were still not reassured because of conflicting information. The longer it takes to change their wishes, the more difficult it is for parents to think.

Through the investigation at Hung Dung Secondary School, it was also found that the cases of changing their wishes were all students who were on the border between passing and failing. For example, with students taking the exam for Huynh Thuc Khang High School, many students were not confident if they scored 24 - 24.5 points on their own. With students taking the exam for Ha Huy Tap High School and Le Viet Thuat High School, if their threshold score was fluctuating between 21 - 22 points, they asked to transfer to suburban schools.
Reverse wave
Nguyen Thi Thuan and her daughter were among the first parents to arrive at Quang Trung Secondary School (Hung Nguyen District) this morning (June 11). Her daughter took the 3-subject entrance exam for grade 10 and is expected to score 18 points - an unsafe score if she registers for NV1 at Thai Lao High School. "We have decided to transfer NV1 to Le Hong Phong High School. In addition, we will also change NV2 and NV3 so that she can have more chances to be admitted. If she fails all her wishes, the family will consider studying in a non-public school" - this parent said.

Tuition fees and long distances are concerns of parents when deciding to change their children's preferences. Meanwhile, this year's 10th grade entrance exam is considered more difficult than previous years, with highly differentiated exam questions, making it difficult to determine the admission score. This is also the reason why parents decide to change their children's preferences, even though this may cause inconvenience in the process of traveling and picking up their children.
At Quang Trung Secondary School in Hung Nguyen district, this year there were 200 students registered to take the 10th grade entrance exam, but by this morning (June 11), more than 100 students had come to school to change their wishes.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Cam Tu - homeroom teacher of class 9D said: More than half of the students in our class have changed their first choice from Thai Lao High School to schools such as Pham Hong Thai High School, Le Hong Phong High School or Kim Lien High School in Nam Dan district. Meanwhile, only 1 student taking the exam at Nam Dan 2 High School asked to change back to Thai Lao High School in Hung Nguyen town. This change is in accordance with the family's wishes and also in accordance with the actual exam results of the students. The students who asked to change their choice mostly had scores below 20 points.
Quang Trung Secondary School is located in Hung Dao Commune (Hung Nguyen District), only about 2km from Thai Lao High School. For many years, this has been the school where most students in the school registered their first choice. However, in the past 2 years, admission to this school has become difficult as each year more than 100 students from Vinh City come to Thai Lao to register for the exam and that number continues to increase after the Department of Education and Training allows candidates to change their choice after completing the exam.
I think that the policy of changing wishes will create more opportunities for candidates and there are students with very low exam scores who still have the chance to pass the public schools. However, with a very special location like our school, registering students' wishes is quite difficult because they have to compete with a large number of candidates from Vinh city - where they have better learning conditions and abilities. For that reason, in the process of advising students and parents, we have to be really careful so that they do not lose their rights. The number 1 goal is that students must pass the public school to reduce some of the future tuition costs for their parents.

Difficult to predict the admission rate
"Parents and students must consider carefully when changing their 10th grade admission wishes to avoid the situation where some places have too many, others have too few" is the information that Cua Lo High School has just updated on the school's official website after 4 days of students taking the 10th grade entrance exam being allowed to change their wishes.

The warning was issued after the school received many sources of information, including many students who, because of concerns about the increase in admission scores, requested to transfer their applications to other schools. However, the number of applications transferred from other places was not as large as the number transferred away.
Teacher Nguyen Hong Hai - Principal of the school said: Before the 10th grade entrance exam took place, the remaining number of students in our school was 96. However, in the past 5 days, there have been more than 60 withdrawal applications and only more than 20 applications remain. Our school is not worried about the lack of students, but it is a pity if students with high exam scores withdraw and transfer to other schools, causing them to lose their opportunity.
In contrast to Cua Lo High School, many suburban schools such as Thai Lao High School and Nghi Loc 3 High School expect the number of transfer students to increase dramatically. Thus, the competition will be higher and the expected benchmark scores may also increase compared to previous years.

With the forecast that hundreds of candidates will change their wishes after June 11 (the last day to change wishes), the picture of 10th grade admission in Nghe An will have many fluctuations and the competition ratio between schools will also be adjusted significantly.
In this case, it is inevitable that the competition ratio of the lower-ranked schools and the schools in the suburbs will increase. On the contrary, the number of students registering for the first choice of the central schools and the top schools will decrease.
The "reverse" wave will probably make the 2024 Grade 10 Entrance Exam more unpredictable and the results are still a "mystery"./.
